Taavetti fortified town was established in 1773 by Russians in a strategically important intersection of roads. During the first construction phase in 1773-1781 they built a bastion of approximately 650x800 meters in round shape. The inner parts of fortress were completed during the second construction phase in 1791-1796. However, the operation of Taavetti fortress was discontinued already in 1803 and the affiliated buildings were sold at auction in 1829. Since the restauration of ruins began in 1980s the fortress is used for outdoor events in summertime.
