Kyminlinna Fortress was built by Russia in 1803-1807. The former small bastion from the 1790s was replaced with the six times bigger fortress. Kyminlinna is a part of a chain of fortresses to defend Ruotsinsalmi which is known as Kotka at present. The fortress was never completed, but it was restored for military purposes since 1939.
