Kastelholm Castle is believed to be built in the end of the 14th century. Originally it was built on a small island, and was surrounded by water and moats filled with several lines of poles. The castle became strategically important during the following centuries, however, it lost its importance gradually. In 1745, it was severely damaged by fire, and became a ruin. The castle was partly used as a granary until the 1930s. The building complex has been partially restored, and it is one of the most famous places for sightseeing in Aland nowadays. The castle is open for public with guided tours.
